How do I keep the lamp from running out of fuel in Zork 1?

There is no way. The only thing to do is to turn it off whenever possible. However, there is an alternate light source. After figuring out how to acquire it, it is best to restart a new game and try to get this alternate light source as early as possible -- that way the lamp can be turned off for a majority of the game. And yes, you do need the lamp for later, so you definitely do not want to waste it.

I used to know. Something like 200 or 300 or 400. It is an even number like that, can't recall exactly.
