Palm Pilot text adventures

Need to sharpen your sword? Or perhaps your lantern ran out of fuel? Well come on in, drink some rye and let Jack sharpen your blade and fill that lantern!

Palm Pilot text adventures

Post by Reaver »

I just recently got a palm pilot, and am looking for some games to put on it.  I already saw the palm pilot Zork trilogy and the program to run, but can anyone tell me where I could possibly find more games?  Specifically, I would like to see if I could find the Enchanter trilogy for the palm pilot.

Yeah that would be nice, but unfortunately I don't think they exist and I haven't ever really looked for them though.

Actually, yes!  You can play all the Enchanter series and virtually any z-code game on a Palm.  Even the z6 games with graphics like Zork Zero and Arthur.  But it depends on which Palm Pilot you have and which interpreter.

PalmFrotz and Frobnitz run great on the lower resolution Palms, like the Palm I-V and the m500 series.  These interpreters come with a z2pdb program which converts any z-code file into a palm database file to run on your Palm.  But these don't support z6.  Most of the Infocom games are z5 and they all can be converted with z2pdb to run on the Palm.

If you have one of the high-resolution Palms like the T2 or T3, PalmFrotz and Frobnitz will work, but not very well it.  However, there two other interpreters specifically designed for the high-res Palm series.  These are Kronos and CliFrotz.

CliFrotz, in particular, even runs z6 games.  Both of these interpreters require one of those little memory modules.  And they don't require converting the z-code into pdb.  You can load your z-code directly onto the Palm and play it.

I'll post links to all of these interpreters later.

One more thing: YOu can download virtually all of the InfoCom games from here:

They even have Leather Goddesses of Phobos and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.  Isn't the internet grand?

Here are some links for z-code interpreters for Palm OS

Frobnitz:
http://frobnitz.sourceforge.net/

Pilot-Frotz:

http://www.refalo.com/palm/interactive.htm

Kronos:

CliFrotz:
http://clifrotz.sourceforge.net/

Note that Pilot-Frotz has not been supported by its creator for several years.  It is still my favorite, but it doesn't run well on the T3 which I now have.  so I mostly use CliFrotz.

Oh so you can load the games in a folder on your SD card and play it that way, thats nifty. Didn't know you could do that with the Frotz stuff, never checked heh, I tried it with Lucas Arts games, demo of Full Throttle but its huge and didn't run anyways, would have been neat though.
