ZGI and nemesis problems under XP.

Need to sharpen your sword? Or perhaps your lantern ran out of fuel? Well come on in, drink some rye and let Jack sharpen your blade and fill that lantern!

The full installation technique works like a charm on Vista, too. The only hang up I had was when it wouldn't let me save the changes to the .zix file. I got around that by saving the modified file to the desktop, deleting the old one, and copying the new one to the appropriate folder. That's probably quite obvious, but I thought I'd mention it.

I used the Inferno instructions for installing Nemesis on XP several months ago and it worked fine.  But you have to copy all of the CDs to the hard disk.  OK.  Hard disks are so big these days, it doesn't really matter.  But if you don't want to have to copy all of the games to the Hard disk, there is an alternative.

You can install the game, just like Inferno's instruction, but when you're done, copy the CD1, CD2 and CD3 folders to the root directory of a new DVD (D:\CD1, D:\CD2, D:\CD3) assuming that D:\ is your CD/DVD drive.

Then, modify the nemesis.zix file like this:

0 D:\CD1 'I
1 D:\CD2 'II
2 D:\CD3 'III
----------------------------
DIR: .
DIR: .\znemmx
DIR: .\znemscr
DIR: .\znemscr\gscr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\tscr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\mscr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\vscr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\ascr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\cscr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\escr.zfs
DIR: .\znemscr\cursor.zfs
DIR: D:\CD1\zassets
DIR: D:\CD1\zassets\global
DIR: D:\CD1\zassets\global\venus
DIR: D:\CD3\zassets\temple
DIR: D:\CD1\zassets\temple
DIR: D:\CD2\zassets
DIR: D:\CD2\zassets\global2
DIR: D:\CD2\zassets\conserv
DIR: D:\CD2\zassets\monast
DIR: D:\CD3\zassets\global3
DIR: D:\CD3\zassets\asylum
DIR: D:\CD3\zassets\castle
DIR: D:\CD3\zassets\endgame

Save the zix file, delete the CD1, CD2 and CD3 folders from the hard disk and now you can play from the DVD, without any disk swaping and free up 1.5 GB from your hard disk.

I haven't tried yet, but I think you can do the same with GI.

Yeah.  I was pretty sure I remembered reading about this here, but I thought it was on the message board.   I looked through the message postings and couldn't find it,  so I experimented myself and posted the results.

Didn't think to look on the main site.

Thanks for the link where it's covered in more detail.

Np, I got the info. from that other site initially and then I ended up modifying it and making my own and trying to make it more newb friendly for those semi non gamers that may want to play Zork but their system can't.
