The coin is probably the only thing you were missing.  At the point in the game where you ring the bell to summon the ferryman, you need to only show him the coin and not give it to him.  It's kind of stupid.

This is slightly off topic, but while we are on the subject of graphical vs. text-based... I am disappointed because personally, I think the other two games sound like they would be cool.  Or at least original.  Someone should track down the writers and find out the full details of the story line and then we can make the games ourselves. :)
